The mother of Illinois PA Julie Sutton-Osgood, who was killed by a drunk driver in July 2005, has started a scholarship in her daughter's name.
Mary Kay Bonds, Sutton-Osgood's mother, says that the donated money will fund scholarships at three medical programs in the Chicago area: the PA program at Cook County Hospital/Malcolm X College, where Sutton-Osgood received her degree; Christ Hospital and Medical Center, where Sutton-Osgood began her health care career as a paramedic; and the residency program for University of Illinois at Chicago medical students at Hope Children's Hospital.
Bonds says that anyone interested in donating directly to the fund may do so at any Charter One Bank location. (Be sure to state specifically that the donation is for the Julie Sutton-Osgood Medical Scholarship NFP.)
Two annual events also are planned by Sutton-Osgood's family and friends to fund the scholarships: a motorcycle run and a black-tie benefit to be held yearly on the Saturday before the anniversary of Julie's death. The events raised $22,000 in 2006.
This year's events are planned for July 21. The motorcycle run will take place in the morning at the Crete Park District in Crete, Ill. The black-tie benefit will be held that evening at the Ridge County Club in Chicago.
Bonds says she'd like to double attendance at both events this year. "I would love to get the support of physician assistants, along with anyone who would like to carry on Julie's legacy with her family," she says.
